Sunflower 27 Dec, Scott (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
May depend a bit on the variety of sunflower. Giant Sunflowers grow to a height of 6 feet so they will shade out dwarf beans. Large sunflowers are also gross feeders so will suck up all the nutrients from the soil so ideally need their own space. Hope this helps. Happy Gardening
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 19 Oct, Robyn (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hi there, I'm not sure if this answer helps but I have not long come back from spending the summer in Indianapolis with a friend. We canned ( bottled) lots of veges, she had three large pickings of her dwarf beans..and she had her sunflowers growing close to them.

When is the time to grow pumpkin, cauliflower, mandarin. Thank you.
Pumpkin 21 Oct, Margaret Symons (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
In HB, pumpkin planting of seeds you've stored from last year gets underway in early October. They're easy to grow, plant deeper than 3 cm if birds may dig them out. They will ramble everywhere in your garden! ....Plant mandarins before November. Mandarins do fine semi rural in HB with no frost protection. But once a year, you need to spray them with oil as they can get sooty mould. The sooner you spray the better if the leaves start showing this black mould as it spreads. I hate spraying if there are bees around so check this out first. I underplant citrus with allysium as this little flower is meant to discourage bugs.
Horseradish 30 Sep, Shelley Johnson (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Just thought I'd mention I found horsradish plants at Mitre 10 today in Westport. I've been looking for it for a very long time so was very happy. Other Mitre 10 store may have it now.
Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 25 Sep, Joss Roberts (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Is it possible for Kumara to be grown in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 26 Sep, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Kumara needs a long summer/autumn before frosts start. Your microclimate might suit it. It's probably worth a try. One kumara used to produce growing shoots would not be very expensive.
Sunflower 24 Sep, Jaylin Driver (New Zealand - temperate climate)

Celery 22 Aug, Eileen Stowers (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Just a query. How is celery grown in NZ. ? When we lived in UK (many years ago) we used to dig a trench and when the celery was showing above the ground it was wrapped in news paper up to the leaves and then increased as the plant grew. This meant that most of the stalks were white and crisp but we find that the NZ celery is stringy and dark green on the outside . Is this to do with the climate or method of cultivating ? Also my father used to empty the soot from the chimney round the plants at a short distance away from the roots. (I know this would not be an option here ) !!!! but maybe there is an alternative.
Celery 17 Jan, Mike Logan (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Celery is grown close together to stop the sunlight from reaching the stalks and lower leaves. If it receive lots of sunlight the stalks go green. You can use different ways to stop it as you said happens in UK. If you grow good big celery you pull the outside 10 or so stalks off to expose the lighter coloured stalks.
Mint (also Garden mint) 21 Aug, Eileen Stowers (New Zealand - temperate climate)
My Grandfaher told me to empty the tea pot round the mint when the tea is cold and it will thrive. I tried it and got three times the size of the leaves that I got before with only water !! Has anyone else tried this ?

When to plant bottle Gourd?

Like all curcubitae, planting time is when your soil is up to 20C. Definitely after all risk of frost is over
Taro (also Dasheen, cocoyam) 18 Jul, Taro (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Planted a whole bag of fijian pink in coromandel in may. Cut the corms up into chunks followed all instructions, but unfortunately they all rotted. Transplanted another variety that was growing before and it was 100% sucess rate although the leaves have produced round brown discolourations. Any suggestion for a particular variety and where to get it from? Cheers
Pumpkin 26 Jun, Pauline (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
From time to time I will have a pumpkin from my garden that when I cut it, it has white lumps in it that are hard and when the pumpkin is cooked it remains hard. Do you know what causes this, maybe something in the soil? something lacking in the soil? a virus? I would love to find out and see if I can avoid or cure this problem.
Pumpkin 23 Sep, Brenda Jenkins (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Did you ever find out what was causing the hard white lumps in your pumpkins
Pumpkin 09 Aug, Rana (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
I heard that is has something to do with uneven watering or spurts of drought.
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 13 Jun, Judy Hogg (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I've dug most of my yams so the grass grubs don't feast on them. I've cleaned and dried them. How can I now store them so they don't wither?
Yam/Oca (also Oka) 15 Jun, John (Australia - temperate climate)
Store them in damp sand in a cool dark place. The damp sand (not too damp) will stop them from withering and the cool dark spot will stop them from sprouting for quite a while.
Okra (also Ladyfinger, gumbo) 09 Jun, Dale (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
