Asparagus 19 May, Joyce (USA - Zone 7b climate): I am away in April and half of May. I live in zone 7b. My asparagus are or nearly are ferns. Is there a variety that takes longer into the season to send up spears? Is it too late in the season to plant these now?

Pumpkin 19 May, Jan (Australia - sub-tropical climate): I have a kent pumpkin vine which is producing lots of male and female flowers but none are developing and I rarely see a bee around. I have tried hand pollinating (thanks to Youtube instructions) in the early morning, some pumpkins grow to golf ball size even some a bit bigger before falling off. Last year I managed to get only two to develop and this year I only have one so far. I have pollinated at least 50 or so females and results have been so poor. The vine gets plenty of sun and water. Any suggestions please.

Onion 19 May, Jan (Australia - sub-tropical climate): Last year I planted brown onions. As they grew their stems became thick and most were as large as a softball or bigger. I kept them growing, waiting for the leaves to die back but they never did and some went to seed. I eventually bent the stems to try to dry them, but that was a bit unsuccessful and on storing them using the hanging plait method, quite a few eventually rotted. This year my onions are growing quite well, some a bit bigger than golf balls now, so what can I do to prevent the same thing from happening as last year.

Pumpkin 07 May, Kel (Australia - sub-tropical climate): I have a butternut vine that produced 3 lovely pumpkins, but has now taken off (very healthy looking) and has mostly male flowers, the occasional female only produces a 2" long fruit before it goes brown and drops off. I suspect that its too late in the season for more, but it is so healthy and vigorous that i am reluctant to pull it out. I was of the opinion that the vine dies after harvest but this has confused me. Any ideas ? Kel

Dill 03 May, Tina Mercado-Mills (USA - Zone 12a climate): I just learned that Dill attracts butterflies, which I would love to see in my beautiful garden. I live in zip code 94509. Cucumber 05 May, TLow (USA - Zone 7b climate): I struggled with cucumber beetles and cucumber fleas last year. It almost decimated my whole cucumber crop. I fought back with wide-spectrum beneficial nematodes for the soil to kill all the larvae, and I ordered a bunch of green lacewing larvae to go with it. In a week, there were no cumber beetles or cucumber fleas. My aphid population, which I wasn't as worried about, shrank as well. I started this season by spraying the soil with beneficial nematodes, and I will order lacewings at the first sign of aphids and their ilk.

Tomato 21 Apr, Celeste Archer (Canada - Zone 8a Mild Temperate climate): I was just thinking about this tomato and thought of you - Indigo Rose. FTN - The history of the Indigo Rose cherry tomato is brief and elusive. In the 1960s, breeders from Bulgaria and the United States began the cross-cultivation of wild tomato strains from South America, specifically Chile and Galapagos, with cultivated varieties - eventually Meyers completed the work on this. I have grown this tomato (and all the others I mentioned) and this girl loves heat and sun .... when all my other tomatoes were drooping from heat and excessive sun these girls where reaching for the sun. A really beautiful tomato. - they where not my biggest producers ( but my area is a little cool for IR's) - the taste and beauty of these tomatoes was unsurpased. Additionally, they seemed to need less water than the other tomatoes. INFO on these tomatoes is scarce... but I would give them a try figuring they are not as tough as the Punta Banda....but certainly a hot/sunny tomato....and unlike the PB they will require some water.

Tomato 13 Apr, Celeste Archer (Canada - Zone 8a Mild Temperate climate): You did not mention if you are dry heat, wet heat, or somewhere in between. There are lots of options --here are a few. Principe Borghese ideal Temperature: 75-95 F ---- Chadwick Cherry or Camp Joy Tomato (sets fruit in 115° F.) --- Cherokee Purple likes wet heat (doesn't handle dry heat well) ---The Punta Banda tomato loves dry heat, and requires less water then most tomatoes- it originates from the Punta Banda Peninsula in Baja California, Mexico ( growing wild there). It can manage on poor soils and is therefore recommened in extreme conditions.

Asparagus 02 Apr, JC (USA - Zone 9b climate): I received a dozen 2 yr Jersey crowns last week here in N TX, but my raised bed isn't ready for them yet. Should I plant them in the ground in the ground and transfer them in the fall? Or should I keep them in the refrigerator until the fall and plant them in the raised bed I will have by then prepared?
