Pumpkin 06 May, Carina Powell (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
I have grown pumpkins 2 years in a row that have hard white lumps in them, I have bought a plant both times so I am thinking it must be something to do with were they are growing. Any idea of what could be coursing this?
Pumpkin 23 Jul, Dennis Green (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Hi, I have the same problem. So far I have not found a definitive answer. Lack of water? Not last summer! Deficiency? Maybe, but cannot find any help there neither. Some pumkin have maybe one lump, others go to the cattle.
Borage (also Burrage, Bugloss) 21 Apr, Raewyn McConnell (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Our Borrage plants, in a bed of light, well drained but nourishing soil, have grown wonderfully and are now in full flower (22.4.2016) They are large, but are showing signs of what appears to be collar rot. Could this be because they were mulched and it is an unseasonally damp summer, or because they have grown larger than usual and become too close together; shutting out sun to the roots? Need to know for the safety of future crops.

Rhubarb 18 Feb, Relda (New Zealand - temperate climate)
We planted a rhubarb plant at the beginning of last year which has been growing well. I have been watering each day over these hot summer days. I have used sheep pellets and we have been eating it lately. However, the plant is healthy looking but as the leaves grow something seems to be eating them and making them like a lace cloth. It's awful. I cannot see anything under the leaves. I have seen a couple of ants running around. I have snail and slug bait out - not seen any. What is ruining the look of my lovely rhubarb plant. Please help.

This damage could be done by earwigs. Layer some damp newspapers nearby. Earwigs love to live between the layers. Paper can then be disposed of earwigs and all.
Strawberries (from seeds) 04 Dec, Arnd Reimann (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hello, I live in Oxford Canterbury NZ. I start my garden and looking for seeds for Strawberries, Rasberries and Currants for the next season. Can you help me or tell me where I can get These seeds? I hope you can help me. Kind regards Arnd Reimann
Strawberries (from seeds) 02 Feb, Karen (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Re strawberries, I've always heard that growing from seeds can be very challenging. I would recommend getting some plants and let them grow runners to build up your collection. I started with 10 plants 18mths ago and now have heaps and heaps of them. I contacted the growers Zealandia (www.zealandia.co.nz) to discuss what variety would be best to grow in my climate. They were very helpful. No experience with Raspberries and Currants.
Rosemary 12 Nov, Lee (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Tip: Rosemary doesn't play well with many other herbs. I've consistently seen it's stems grow almost at right angles away from nearby parsley, for instance. To avoid this you'll need approximately a 1.5 metre radius/distance away from parsley. Oregano and thyme tend not to affect the rosemary much, but these will begin to grow around or away from rosemary - it's quite funny to watch a plant do a slow-motion about-face; and if you think that following that the idea of the old folk song sounds nice and you plant parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme in a pot, pretty much everything stunts and dies. Start cuttings in the spring thru summer (just snip off the top 30cm of a stem and plant it 15cm deep in-situ) and keep the soil damp/watered (once a day is usually enough) until you see the end of the soft tip of the cutting stand up under it's own wieght, consistently. For a few days-to-a-week after making the cutting, the soft tip will rise and fall with the heat/light of the day and then finally stand up. That's how you know it's taken. It'll shoot away pretty quickly after that.

Rosemary 18 Jul, Philip (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Gwenn, Put your question in a Google search. Here are three places that came up early when I tried it: oderings.co.nz/Shop/Oderings-Plants/Herbs-Cooking-Fresh/Herbs-Cooking-Fresh-__I.84__C.24353 gstuff.co.nz/shop/garden/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=806 egmontseeds.co.nz/herbs/rosemary You will probably also find them in your local garden centre e.g. Mitre10, Bunnings, Placemakers, will have them, as do some supermarkets.

Tomato 26 Jul, Deepak Bhatia (New Zealand - temperate climate)
How much sunlight does the tomatoe plant need Thanks
Tomato 30 Mar, Mike (New Zealand - temperate climate)
For best results, 6 - 8 hrs of direct sunlight per day. Calculate every hour before midday as being only a 1/2 hr. For instance, if your plants are sheltered from the morning sun until 10:00am, calculate that as only 1 hr, therefore you require another 5 - 7 hours of afternoon sun.
