Chives (also Garden chives) 14 Sep, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Kathy, you can grow chives in pots. They form a clump and will last a few years if you keep cutting them.

Thanks Liz, put them in a pot today.
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 13 Sep, Dez (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I've had my BB planted since March/April. They have heaps of flowers on them but there's no beans appearing. Have seen plently of bees to germinate them but still nothing. any ideas on what's gone wrong - with it now being sept??
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 14 Sep, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Dez, do you have bumble bees around ? They tend to shortcut the nectar gathering from BB flowers by piercing a hole though the back of the flower.
Sunflower 09 Sep, Lynda Lepelaars (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Can sunflowers grow at the coast, I was going to grow some up against a fence. Also I have another section at a different location in which I have hundreds of seeds that I would like to plant out. Do you have to keep them away from livestock? Look forward to your help. Regards Lynda
Pumpkin 03 Sep, Jeff (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have saved seed from a pumpkin we like and allowed to dry. I am soaking some in water and some in a damp paper towel and left some dry. None are showing any sign of striking. Do I just wait longer or will they strike if I plant some out?
Pumpkin 11 Sep, Mike (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Take a plastic tray you buy your meat or chicken in from supermarkets - 2-3
Pumpkin 03 Sep, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Pumpkin seeds will take about 7-10 days to show any activity. Your best bet is damp paper towel or seed raising mix. As they are frost tender, pumpkin seeds need some warmth to start germinating.
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 01 Sep, warren (New Zealand - temperate climate)
ok i live near the sea in eastern southland my advice from very experenced gardeners in winton to plant broad beans very early august or before that.... i have always found that you can plant them later before xmas and obtain a good crop if you plant early in cold ground its not going to get there quicker . i dont think that the ground will be at 6 deg on the first day of spring What is your thoughts any how. another comment on blanching, then freezing all it will do is change the colour to a dull grey the fact is that it is going to be cooked any how, i stopped blanching ages ago.
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) 22 Aug, Pamela Dawson (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Are seeds for corn salad plants readily available in nurseries - first I have heard of it from a friend and would like to try growing some. If available what is it known as on the seed packet.
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) 22 Aug, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Pam, you can buy corn salad seeds from online suppliers, like Egmont Seeds.

Hi You say sow bean seeds at soil temps between 16 - 30C or August to April. Our soil temp, in Auckland, wont get to 16C until late October. Will it still be OK to sow in late August. Thanks in anticipation John McGregor

Can you please tell me what is the best type of fertiliser to prepare the soil for kumara?
Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 11 Sep, Mike (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Any general fertiliser - but probably something with a fair bit of P in it. N P K - something like 10 -14N, 6-10 P, 10-15 K.

Borage (also Burrage, Bugloss) 11 Aug, Barbie (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
We are in Taupo where we get a lot of frosts. Our borage plants are unaffected and just keep on flowering week in week out. In Auckland our borage plants died back in late summer.
Yacon (also Sunroot) 02 Aug, Heather-anne Lang (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hi I live on Pirongia in the Waikato and am wanting to grow some yacon. Does anyone have any crowns to share or sell. Because we are on the side of a mountain we don't get frosts so hopefully it will grow well. Thanks.
Yacon (also Sunroot) 08 Feb, Jay (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
Hi Heather, Did you get any yakon when you inquired? I live in the village and have just been given a plant, we could share.
Sunflower 28 Jul, Sheryl (New Zealand - temperate climate)
We would like to grow sunflowers for my daughters wedding in late February 2018, I am in Auckland. When would be the best time to plant them? I will buy the young plants from a garden centre I think. We are going to grow them on a friends large property out in Whitford. They may get some wind. Also they are rabbits on the land?? Many thanks
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 28 Jul, Prakash (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
About chilli peppers If you see the leaves have got burnt with frost better to harvest all chilli and grind in food processor or leave it whole and store in the freezer and use it when needed. Trim the trees heavily ie only leaving about 30 centimeters above ground. It will or may grow back in summer. You can add some mulch around the plants too. Seeds can only be obtained from ripe chilli. It’s much better to buy plants and grow them then trying to plant from seeds. Plant after Labour weekend only if the soil is not too cold.
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 27 Jul, debi riordan (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
When you say don't plant beans too close to garlic.... how close is too close? I have garlic growing in my raised garden bed and was going to plant yellow beans about 30cm from them. Is that too close?
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 11 Sep, Mike (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Probably 4-5' away min.
Garlic 20 Jul, Prakash (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Is it late to plant garlic in July in nz subtropical
Rhubarb 14 Jul, christine cunliffe (New Zealand - temperate climate)
can you grow rhubarb in shade
Rhubarb 12 Sep, Mike (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Read the notes here. A cool weather crop. In warmer climates it can be grown in some shade.
Rhubarb 29 Jul, Brigitte (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Our Rhubarb was grown in semi shade with sun for the morning till afternoon under a leaky spouting ;) and it grew beautifully, huge leaves also. We moved one crown to a rather shady area which got little sun and it failed to thrive for a start - again we got large leaves, but the stalks were quite thin, so in a nutshell....semi shade with some sun seems to be best :)
