Tomato 23 May, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Tomatoes are frost tender, so yes you need some sort of protection for them, if you want to grow all the year round.
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) 19 May, Ame (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Kings Seeds have corn salad, and also a winter mesclun mix which is good for cool planting
Jerusalem Artichokes (also Sunchoke) 17 May, Mike (New Zealand - temperate climate)
So if I've just been given tubers (good gardener but never grown them before), they need to be stored like other tubers (spuds/kumaras) over winter? I have a couple of areas on the north side of a stucco house that definitely doesn't get frost - has anyone planted now and managed to overwinter them in the ground ok?
Jerusalem Artichokes (also Sunchoke) 19 May, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Mike, you can leave the tubers in the ground in warmer areas of NZ, we have done that in Northland. In fact it is difficult to find all the tubers, so they will probably shoot up in the Spring even if you have light frosts.
Borage (also Burrage, Bugloss) 10 May, NC (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Want to grow borage through the winter in Hamilton. Successful do you think?
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 08 May, Elizabeth (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I love BB and want to start a container garden, I have tough big wooden troughs. Any hints recommendations for a new gardener?
Broad Beans (also Fava bean) 21 May, Gaye (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
Planted bb plants in Invercargill a few weeks ago as climate autumnal. I think they will be good early spring. Often whatever is at garden centres will be an indication on what to put in. Also put kale and few lettuce plants in and will put garlic in in June
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) 02 May, Diane Francis (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Where can I buy lambs lettuce in Auckland, or can I buy it from you?
Corn Salad (also Lamb's lettuce or Mache) 02 May, Liz at Gardenate (New Zealand - temperate climate)
We do not sell seeds or plants through Gardenate. You could try Egmonts.co.nz for seeds.
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 30 Apr, Aaron Love (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have a Chilli Peter bush that I have had a lot of peppers off, can I keep it growing for another season? Thanks Aaron
Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 11 Aug, Peter (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
I have a chocolate Habanero plant which I brought inside to over winter and I'm amazed to say it actually flowered and I see it has fruit developing now (mid August). These chilli plants need a long growing season and I'm optimistic that I'll get masses of fruit from this plant in the coming months for my hot sauce recipes. Did you manage to over winter your chilli plant Aaron?
Pumpkin 27 Apr, Lindsey (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I would like to grow some pepitas or other breed of squash that has an edible seed. Can you reccomend a type and tell me where i can buy seed, cheers Lindsey
Pumpkin 22 Jul, Walter fargo (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hi Lindsy. Try Kings seeds, they have two types of oil seed pumpkin (that is the type you want). Austrian Oil Seed Pumpkin and Pumpkin Lady Godiva. Be careful with the water when sowing the seed, as they have no husk they can rot if the soil is too wet.
Asparagus 25 Apr, Sean0 Wilson (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
When do I cut down my asparagus ferns to prepare the bed for winter? At the moment – still quite lush and green. I’m from Chch.
Asparagus 06 May, Green thumb (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Cut the ferns in late August and put compost or composted manure on it. Stop watering them now.
Peas 24 Apr, Jim Cooper (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have planted scarlet runner beans with great success but the following years I have experienced problems growing them. I understand that they need a nitrogen fixing plant to improve the soil and that spring peas are a good way to do this. Can you recommend a good variety? I believe you need to dig them into the soil just after flowering. Is this correct?
Peas 06 May, Green thumb (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Beans and peas are nitrogen fixing.
Asparagus 20 Apr, Michelle (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have grown some asparagus from seeds and they are about two inches high. I really want to plant them in the garden now (because I remember to water my veggie garden but often forget to water the seedlings so I just want to get them in the garden so they are better looked after also they don't dry out so quickly there as well.) Is it Ok to plant them now and will they survive the Pukekohe/Auckland winter in the vegetable garden and all come up in spring?
Leeks 20 Apr, Derek R (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have just lifted a fantastic crop of leeks. They grew so easily which I didn’t expect through the summer months but so happy they did. Would it be ok to replant leeks in the same soil for winter.
Chicory (also Witloof, Belgian endive) 15 Apr, Yolanda Simons (New Zealand - temperate climate)
where can I please purchase witlof plants . Kind regards Yolanda
Chicory (also Witloof, Belgian endive) 01 Jan, Deborah (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I bought a bundle of seedlings at PacnSave in Mt Albert in October or November. They were from Awapuni Nurseries in Palmerston North. They are now enormous, bitter and taking up space. I've just read I was supposed to dig them up, cut them back hard and plant them in the dark but that didn't happen. They'll probably become compost, sadly.
Carrot 14 Apr, Rob (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
Do carrots need a lot of sun
Carrot 09 May, (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Looks like NZ cool/mountain climate zone doesn't work for carrots. Try the aussie cool zone for carrots. Plants need sunlight 6-8 hours generally.
Carrot 17 Apr, Michael (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
I find that difficult to believe given that all of the commercial carrot growing in the North Island is done in the volcanic plateau around Ohakune and Rataehi.
Pumpkin 13 Apr, G carr (New Zealand - temperate climate)
What causes the white mould type stuff that attacks pumpkins .I try hard not to spray is there a none chemical solutions to this problem. Thank you
Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 06 Apr, Sam (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hi there.. I harvested my Kumara in March and unfortunately most of them tubers had multiple small holes in them. Looks like some type of insects got there first and ruined it. Is there anything that I can spray them with and kill them little bugs before they ruin my crops next season.. cheers
Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 12 Jul, Brendan (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I've had good success planting an overwintering crop of mustard seeds immediately following kumara harvest.
Horseradish 05 Apr, Alan Russell (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I want to buy some horse radish roots here in Auckland... any gardeners that have some please email... thanks Alan (Gardenate does not allow sales advertising - perhaps you could arrange an exchange ?)
Horseradish 31 May, Lucy (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
I have plenty of horse radish, but I live in United States and I don’t know if I can send the roots over seas. If I can mail the roots I will. Does anyone know?
Horseradish 10 Jun, Robin (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
New Zealand has strict quarantine laws when it comes to importing fruit, herbs and vegetables.I am sure they would not let it come in.
