Can Cucumbers be grown in large garden pots?

Yes - have good fertile soil to start with and make sure you water them regularly.

Water the garden the day before you are going to plant the seeds. Put the seeds in a glass of water the night before you are going to plant them. Plant the seeds the next day and give a light watering. DO NOT water again for 4 days. Then give a light watering each second day - depending on your soil type.

Try fresh chopped dill on young boiled potatoes with lots of butter and freshly cracked pepper!
Rhubarb 30 Aug, Katharin (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Harvesting notes say do not harvest rhubarb until a year old ! So what does that mean ? ie if I buy plants from garden centre I’m guessing already a year old ??? Maybe . Or does it mean once a crown is planted in my garden leave for first year . I have planted crowns given to me but didn’t do well so have moved ... now looking better , I have a variety of plants from garden centres , markets etc . I’m confused as too what year I can start harvesting. Some of it this season we hope ... how will we know . ?
Rhubarb 03 Sep, anon (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
I have not seen rhubarb growing for 50+ years but I would guess it depends on the size of the crown and how fat/big and healthy the stalks/crown looks. I bought asparagus crowns - about 50mm diameter - how old probably 6-9 mths. I grew some from seed and at 12 mths they were 150mm dia. Judge by how good the plant looks.
Garlic 28 Aug, Jules Sturm (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Here's a tip ,to get your garlic sprouting prior to planting ( using cloves) separate the cloves ,place on a plate & put in the fridge ..the temperature drop & darkness shocks them into sprouting ...you will get both root& shoot growth so plant when roots about 5-10mm long ...

Also plant around end of June.

I’ve just acquired some in Southland. I’ll grow it up this season and can pass some root on to you in autumn/winter if you’d like? If you send me your email address, I can let you know when I harvest it.

Hi Anna, Can I have some of yours later? I live in Northland. My email is [email protected] Thank you.
Cucumber 22 Aug, Alicia (New Zealand - temperate climate)
If your harvest is small then you could try hand pollination to ensure a larger harvest, as no pollination means no fruit.
Cucumber 26 Aug, Anon (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Hand pollen in the morning as the flower is shut in the arvo.
Jerusalem Artichokes (also Sunchoke) 20 Aug, Brian GRIBBEN (New Zealand - temperate climate)

Asparagus 18 Aug, Anne Davey (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Can you spray for weeds around the asparagus in winter?
Asparagus 19 Aug, (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Three suggestions 1. Straight after you cut all the dead ferns off in winter spray the weeds - not recommended really you could kill the plants. 2. Give the ground a watering and pull the weeds out by hand - recommended. 3. Don't let the weeds grow much pull them out as they germinate. At the moment I have dozens of tomato seeds germinating from the mulch/compost I just put on my asparagus.

Choko/Chayote (also Chayote squash, christophene, chouchou, mirliton) 10 Aug, David (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
When to prune choko vine? Have got some healthy fruits from 1st plant and the vine seems to be weathering now. Have been advised to trim it down to the ground. Any advice please?
Choko/Chayote (also Chayote squash, christophene, chouchou, mirliton) 14 Aug, (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
After the fruiting season, cut back the choko vines to four or five short vines to grow for the next season. Chokos are best picked when they are young, because they are more tender and can be eaten with their skin on.May 3, 2019.
