Mint (also Garden mint) 27 Jan, Anon (New Zealand - temperate climate)
You may have hacked it back too hard. Freshish cow dung won't do anything at first, it needs to decompose first and it is not rich in fertiliser. Don't over fertilise any crop it will only produce massive growth.
Pumpkin 25 Jan, Michael Daly (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
I have plenty of runners on my pumpkins when can you start cutting these off They are greys and green colours. Why are you not supposed to grow near potatoes.
Pumpkin 27 Jan, anon (New Zealand - temperate climate)
You don't cut the runners (vine) off, how do you expect to grow any pumpkin if you cut them off.
Pumpkin 23 Mar, Vinny (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
You do cut the runners but only once one or two pumpkins have started to bud from the flower. If you let the runners lead long they sap the goodness from the growing pumpkins making them small and even die off.
Brussels sprouts 23 Jan, (New Zealand - temperate climate)
My Brussels sprouts plants have a purple tinge on the stems. Are they deficient in some trace element? They also seem to be shedding the bottom leaves which have turned yellow .
Brussels sprouts 27 Jan, anon (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Sprouts are more a winter thing than Summer I thought. I don't know about cool climate requirements.

Strawberry Plants 16 Jan, Suzanne (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I live in central auckland and grow strawberries in a large concrete trough approx 340 mm deep and wide. I had the opportunity to get a number of strawberry plants a few days ago, and want to know if I plant them now, protect them will they winter ok?
Strawberry Plants 20 Jan, Another gardener (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I live sub-tropical Queensland Australia, strawberry plants here send out runners from early summer. These runners develop new plants along the runner. These new plants are transplanted out early April, they grow and produce fruit from May to Sept. IF those plants offered to you have soil all around the roots and has not been disturbed much then they may keep growing. My suggestion is to find new plants around the time you normally plant strawberries in your area. Read up about growing strawberries in NZ.

Horseradish 28 Feb, MO (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Be very careful when planting horseradish as it is invasive, confine it to a container.

Beans - climbing (also Pole beans, Runner beans, Scarlet Runners) 15 Jan, Anon (New Zealand - temperate climate)

Yacon (also Sunroot) 09 Jan, Greg Bundle (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Can you tell me where to purchase yacon tubers? In nz Thanks Greg
Yacon (also Sunroot) 12 Jan, Alice Phillips (New Zealand - temperate climate)
You can usually get them on trademe but to get tubers this year you would need a plant that's already underway. I have some available most years if you contact me in August.
Yacon (also Sunroot) 10 Jan, Anon (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Try seed selling companies on the net.
Cabbage 06 Jan, Ian (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have used, for the first time, garden domes from the ware house. At last I don't have to spray for white butterfly. The domes let nothing in due to the mesh size. Bees can get in but find it hard to get out. So I now have four of these domes. Snails, birds, you name it. Nothing can get in.

Watermelon 26 Dec, Phoebe (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have a watermelon growing and setting teeny baby fruit but they all wither and drop off within a week of setting. Any ideas?
Watermelon 30 Dec, anon (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Sounds like you have no bees to pollinate the female flower. Do it by hand. (With a soft artist's brush or use a male flower)

Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 27 Dec, Anon (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Sounds like you have no bees to pollinate the female flowers. Hand pollinate if you like. Look up the internet to find out how to do it.
