Yacon (also Sunroot) 11 Oct, Susan Hawes (New Zealand - temperate climate)
We grow all our own food. Large longstanding garden but my husband is having blood sugar issues and we're looking for yakon rivers to plant. Tried Koanga Gardens but they have none. 0274223442 [email protected] Thanks

Should I pull my Brussel sprouts out as no sign of producing just all leaves if you could let me know please kind regards Claire Hewson

No use growing them if not producing.
Celeriac 16 Sep, Michelle Tanner (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I grew wonderful celeriac in Kent,UK on limestone soil but here in the Waikato I have much less success. If they grow at all they are much smaller (golf to tennis ball rather than the small football sized ones from before). I am going to give it one last go this year, trying a variety of sizes and will feed and water like mad!
Celeriac 17 Sep, (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Buy a cheap pH tester. If you have heavy soil, lighten it up a bit with sand or compost. Start with with good rich soil and MAYBE a light fert when plants are 8 weeks old. DON
Celeriac 18 Sep, (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Don't over fert or water it. 3 good waterings a week is enough.
Celeriac 16 Sep, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
The answer might be in your soil. It would be worth testing to see how acid it is . Most NZ soils tend towards acidity. Your limestone soil in Kent was more alkaline than acid.

I suggest you read as much as you can. That will give you clues when to plant and harvest.
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 31 Aug, Mandy (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Are snow peas better to be staked and do they grow up tall like beans or not so high? (Gardenate : see info here /www.gardenate.com/plant/Snow Peas?zone=5 )
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 01 Sep, Anonymous (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
There are snow peas that can grow over 2m tall. Then there are some that grow to 1.2-1.5m. In sub tropical Australia I grow Giant Oregon, to about 1.2-1.5m. Good heavy producer. You need to build a trellis for them to grow on. I have 2 posts 2.4m apart and 1.8m out of the ground. A cross beam at the top to stop them falling inwards. I use chicken wire as my trellis. Plant about 15 peas each side of the wire. Then I put 3-4 stakes (15-18mm square) on each side. I then wrap cord/twine/?? around the stakes and posts, each 150-200mm up the posts, for the plant to grip onto.

Eggplant (also Aubergine) 27 Aug, Srini K (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Hi, I have sown seeds in seed trays and its been 20 days, no sign of any seedlings. Understand its still cold in Auckland, Just wanted to check if the seeds will germinate once its get warm or I should considers sowing seeds again when its gets warm?
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 28 Aug, Anonymous (New Zealand - temperate climate)
You need soil temperature of min of 15c and preferably 25-30c to germinate egg plant. The guide recommends planting seeds Sept Oct. Also if you over water the seeds they go rotten. Seeds should germinate in 12-18 days. Have a little dig around and see if they are ok or rotten. I would suggest planting mid Sept at the earliest. Or buy seedlings.
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 02 Sep, Srini K (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Thanks for your response. The guide for sub-tropical climate suggests to plant in Aug, Sep. Great news all seeds germinated in approximately 22 days :) Cant wait to plant these outside.
Asparagus 22 Aug, Chris McGeough (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Heads are just coming up but are being eaten by something very small that is killing each head off or leaving scars. Put some chook manure on a couple of months ago and wonder if its bugs in that? Any help would be great.
Asparagus 24 Aug, Liz (New Zealand - temperate climate)
It might be slugs or snails, try using something to kill or deter them.
Asparagus 24 Aug, Anonymous (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Google it - bugs that eat asparagus. Probably have to go out at night to see them. Then look for a spray, organic or chemical. Maybe don't use chook manure, or compost it before putting it on. I don't put compost/manure on until mid-late August.
Florence Fennel (also Finocchio) 22 Aug, Phil Jones (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hi, Can anyone tell we where to buy the Florence Fennel plants or seeds please? I live in Wellington. Thanks.
Florence Fennel (also Finocchio) 05 Nov, Ursula M (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
When you get them going, leave one to go to seed at the end of the season. Leave it in the ground afterwards and you'll get another cropping of bulbs appearing at the base of the old plant. I have seeds if you're still stuck.
Florence Fennel (also Finocchio) 06 Oct, Penelope Bedggood (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hi Phil. I may be a bit late but if you're still after fennel seeds I have a bunch I can post to you.

Check internet seed selling companies.
